What is a heat pipe?

A heat pipe is a sealed hollow tube that contains a small amount of liquid, usually water or refrigerant, under vacuum. Heat pipes are designed to transfer heat from one end to the other with extremely high efficiency. When heat is applied to one end of the pipe, the liquid inside evaporates, turning into steam. This vapor then flows to the cooler end of the pipe, where it condenses into a liquid, releasing the absorbed heat. The liquid then returns to the hot end via capillary action or gravity, and the cycle repeats.

The effectiveness of a heat pipe heatsink lies in its ability to transfer heat through two primary mechanisms: conduction and phase change.
1. Conduction: Heat pipes are usually made of materials with high thermal conductivity, such as copper. When heat is applied to the evaporator portion of the heat pipe, it conducts heat to the liquid inside, causing it to evaporate.
2. Phase Change: The phase change from liquid to vapor is where the magic happens. This process absorbs a large amount of heat (latent heat of vaporization) without a corresponding increase in temperature. The vapor then moves to the condenser section where it releases heat and condenses back into a liquid.
This combination of conduction and phase change allows heat pipes to transfer heat from thermal components more efficiently than traditional heat sinks that rely solely on conduction and convection.
